Locally, Westport boasted the highest voter turnout with 61.6 percent of registered voters making their voices heard. The lowest turnout was in Bridgeport, where only 37.5 percent cast votes on Election Day.
Statewide, the town that saw the highest voter turnout was Cornwall, where 74.8 percent of registered voters cast ballots, while the city of Hartford saw the lowest turnout percentage at 32.2 percent.
“Overall we had a very healthy and respectable voter turnout of just about 56 percent of registered voters in Connecticut,” Merrill said in a statement. “Once again, we saw strong voter turnout in our small towns, while the cities continue to lag behind. Election Day problems in Hartford may have had a depressing impact on voter turnout in that city, which is truly unfortunate."
Merrill praised Connecticut's Election Day Registration, which allowed for nearly 14,000 residents to cast a ballot.
