Arlene Hook Simpkins, 78, Of Southport

SOUTHPORT, Conn. – Arlene Hook Simpkins, 78, of Southport, died Sunday, July 26.

She was born in Steubenville, Ohio, June 25, 1937, to John DeMarr and Margaret Hook. She was a graduate of Steubenville Catholic Central and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University in 1958 and a master’s degree from NYU in guidance and counseling.

She moved to Connecticut in 1960, and was married to Robert Simpkins. In 1964, she gave birth to their only child, James Bradley (Brad).

She worked as a guidance counselor at Greenwich High School for 40 years, and retired in 2006. She enjoyed spending time at the beach. She spent many summers on Martha’s Vineyard, enjoying Menemsha and Lucy Vincent's Beach. While in her home town of Southport, Connecticut, she would enjoy time spent at Sasco Beach, particularly in the evenings watching the sunset and the moonrise. She had great knowledge and a vast interest in astronomy.

She is survived by her son, Brad (Polly); two grandsons; and four siblings.

A remembrance reception will be held Friday, July 31 from 6-8 p.m. at Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Ave., Southport.
