STRATFORD, Conn. - Arthur Giavara of Stratford died Thursday, June 20. He was 89.
Giavara was born and raised in Blackstone, Mass., son of Spiro and Chirata Gachi Giavara, he resided in Fairfield for over 40 years and had lived in Stratford since 1994. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Company C 48th Engineer Combat Battalion. He received a presidential citation for bravery. He worked for the Bullard Co and then for Table Talk Pies until his retirement.
He was a longtime member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church and was the head epitroph and member of the Parish Council for many years. He was a member of the Smith Richardson and Oronoque Country Clubs.
Giavara is survived by his wife, Carol Purdy Giavara; son, Michael Giavara of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter, Marie Wood (Tom) of Avon; two grandsons; brothers, Sam Giavara (Gina) of Stratford and Nick Giavara (Gloria) of Quinebaug; sister, Sina Balamaci of Bridgeport; stepdaughter, Deborah Purdy; stepson, Donald Purdy (Kathleen); four step grandchildren; brothers-in-law, George Friend (Jeannine) and James Friend (Marion); sister-in-law, Geraldine McGovern (George); stepdaughter-in-law, Elaine Purdy; several nieces, nephews; and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Frances Sue Shery Giavara; and stepson, David Purdy.
Calling hours are Monday, June 24 from 11 a.m. at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Road, Easton, until the time of services. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, June 24 at the church with burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Dimitrie Church.
