Donna Bender, 63, Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Donna Jane Bender of Fairfield, the wife of Ken Bender, died Thursday, Jan. 28, in St. Vincent's Medical Center. She was 63.

She was born in Asheboro, N.C., and had been a Fairfield area resident for 45 years. A graduate of Katherine Gibbs College in Manhattan and Staples High School in Westport, she worked at various retailers and The Fairfield Store, and as computer support technician for the Fairfield Public School System at Stratfield Elementary School, and more recently at Roger Ludlowe Middle School.

She was active in the faith she had converted to and attended Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Fairfield, serving as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, lector, a member of the liturgical committee and head of the Family Mass Committee. 

She enjoyed doing needlework, visiting the beach, visiting with friends and family, going to wineries, reading and teaching classes on knitting and computers.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Kenneth “Ken” Bender; children Kimberly Anne “Kym” Bender and her fiancé, Michael R. Boncoddo; Evan Thomas Bender and his partner, Tim Burke; stepfather John A. Russo; brother John R. Russo; stepsister Jamie Breisler; stepbrother Frederick Russo; great-uncle Donald Richardson; and other family members.

She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Helen Russo; and father, Ray McKelly Hughes.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., meeting directly in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield, for a Mass of Christian burial.
