FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Dr. Herman Austrian of Fairfield died Nov. 18 at his home. He was 88.
Born June 30, 1924, in New York City, he was the son of Paul and Edith Austrian. He served in the Navy during World War II and received a bachelor’s degree from New York University after his discharge.
Austrian studied medicine in Zurich and Paris and received his medical doctorate from the University of Zurich. He completed his residency and internship at Bridgeport Hospital and established a medical practice in Trumbull with Dr. Bernard J. Sherlip in 1955. He retired 40 years later.
An accomplished artist, working with oil paint and in sculpture, Austrian’s work was featured in several issues of Connecticut Medicine and The Journal of the Connecticut State Medical Society .
Austrian is survived by two children, Dr. Donald J. (Hyla) Austrian, of Oxford, Conn., and Sandra M. Austrian, of New London; three stepdaughters, Joanne (Philip West) Hus, of Fairfield, Jennifer H. (William) Duckworth, of Woodbury, Conn., and Juli R. (Geoff) Friedlander, of Cornwall, N.Y.; his former wife, Phyllis Rogolsky, of New London, Conn.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Jan Austrian; three siblings, Ceil Silver, Dr. Sol Austrian and Shirley Leed; and a son, Kenneth.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Spear Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation.
