FAIRFIELD, Conn. - William Isaac Glass of Fairfield, formerly of Bridgeport, died Nov. 28. He was 99.
Dr. Glass was born May 18, 1915, in New York City, to Morris Glass and Annie (Marks) Glass. He grew up in the Bronx and attended Townsend Harris Hall High School. He went on to attend the College of the City of New York (CCNY), where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. He graduated in 1934, magna cum laude. He received his M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1938. He trained in surgery and ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, rising to the rank of major. His final assignment was as chief of general surgery at the 22nd General Hospital in Blandford, England.
After the war and his marriage, he moved with his family to Bridgeport. He established a practice of ophthalmology in downtown Bridgeport, serving for a number of years as chief of ophthalmology at Bridgeport Hospital. After moving to Fairfield in 1957, he became involved in local affairs, including service on the Fairfield Board of Education, RTM and on the Fairfield Woods Library building committee. He was a member of Beth El synagogue in Fairfield for many years.
Dr. Glass is survived by his sons, Allan Glass of Bethesda, Md., and Paul Glass of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Marnie Glass of Santa Monica, Calif., and Diane Glass of New York; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Miriam.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 2 at the Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, followed by interment in the Glass family plot at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, N.Y. Shiva will be observed at 40 Beechwood Lane, Fairfield.
