Eleanor B. Fitz, 83, Of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Eleanor Plantner Fitz of Fairfield died Dec. 2. She was 83.

Fitz was born March 23, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, to James and Barbara Plantner. She joined the United States Navy WAVES during the Korean conflict. After leaving the Navy she and her husband, Edward, settled in Fairfield where they raised their family.

She was employed for 24 years at the University of Bridgeport and during her retirement volunteered her time as a reader to second grade students at the Blackham School for 12 years. She also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in West Haven. She was a member in the WAVES National Unit 82 CT Mariners, the American Legion Post 143 and it’s auxiliary as well as the National Association of Naval Veterans Port 5 of Bridgeport. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield and its Women's Association.

Fitz is survived by her husband Edward J. Fitz, Jr.; daughter, Ellie Fitz Susmeyer (Joseph) of Easton; sons, Edward J. Fitz III (Tenya) of Woodbury, and James Fitz (Anne) of Fairfield; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Helen Chvosta of Maple Heights, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield at a date and time to be announced.
