Elizabeth Y. Carter, 68, Of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Elizabeth Y. Carter, 68, of Fairfield, beloved wife of Raymond Carter, passed away suddenly July 26, 2015 at Bridgeport Hospital.

Carter was born Aug. 11, 1946, in Derby, the daughter of the late Edwin and Elizabeth (Veres) Yocher.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Edwin and Paul Yocher, as well as a number of nephews and nieces.

She began her career as a high school mathematics teacher in the West Haven Public School System. She advanced to become the department head and also spent several years consulting at the state Department of Education.

Carter authored a series of mathematical textbooks, titled "Math in Stride." along with her longtime colleague Clare Clark. She also became the director of mathematics for the Hamden Public School System. She retired from the public school system in 2013 and transitioned into a role as the director of grants in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven.

In addition to her professional endeavors, she also was an active member and had various leadership roles at the Connecticut Council of Leaders of Mathematics, the Project to Increase Mastery of Mathematics and Science and the Community Advent Christian Church in Norwalk.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at The Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. Calling hours will take place at 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Ave., Norwalk.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Community Advent Christian Church in Norwalk, 16 Van Zant St., which will later be transferred into the Elizabeth Carter Foundation for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and the Arts.
