Eugene J. Richter, Fairfield Resident And Bridgeport Native

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Eugene J. Richter, beloved husband of Nancy, died Saturday, Aug. 1.

Richter celebrated 54 loving years with Nancy and is survived by their five children, their spouses and grandchildren: Paul, his wife, Margaret, and their sons Matthew and Jack; Bob, his wife, Andrea, and their children Stephanie (and her husband Neil and new baby on the way) Bobby, Jamie, Abby and Elizabeth; Peter and his husband Tim; Stephen, his wife, Kim, and their children Jenna and Mia; Ann O'Leary, her husband, Jim, and their children Patrick, Erin, Bridget and Shannon.

He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Pauline Richter, and two brothers Edmond and Konrad.

Richter grew up in Bridgeport, attended Harding High School and the University of Connecticut and was an ardent UConn women's basketball fan.

He began his career in real estate for the Knight Agency and in 1958 founded Richter Real Estate. A self-made businessman, he was honored throughout the years for his dedication to his community and easy manner as he performed volunteer work for many local nonprofits and town committees.

He was an active Rotarian, having served as president of the Rotary Foundation and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past president of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and received the Harold Harris Award for his contributions to the Town of Fairfield. He was past president of the Fairfield Board of Realtors and served on the board as treasurer the past 25 years.

A man of deep faith, he was a parishioner, Eucharistic Minister and active member of St. Pius X Church for more than 50 years.

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Spear Miller Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
