Helen Chelak, 92, Lifelong Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Helen Bartnikowski Chelak of Fairfield died July 16 at her home. She was 92. 

A lifelong Fairfield resident, Chelak was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Bridgeport to Stanley and Catherine Bartnikowski. She left school at an early age to support her family when her father died. Chelak worked as a cafeteria worker at Andrew Warde High School. 

During her retirement, she continued her love of serving food by volunteering in the kitchen at the Fairfield Senior Center. Chelak enjoyed playing bingo at the Fairfield Senior Center and was a member of the Golden Age Club and St. James Church in Stratford. 

She also enjoyed watching game shows on television, listening to summer concerts at the gazebo and spending time with her son. 

Chelak is survived by a son, Michael Chelak Jr.; a brother, Walter Bartnikowski, of Fairfield; and a niece. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Chelak Sr.; a brother, Chester Bartnikowski; and two sisters, Jean Staffey and Regina Bartnikowski. 

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday at Holy Family Church in Fairfield. Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home in Fairfield handled arrangements.
