Helen Varaljay, 98, Of Fairfield, Secretary At Andrew Warde High School

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Helen Varaljay of Fairfield died Sunday, June 16. She was 98.

Varaljay was born Aug. 10, 1914, in Manhattan, daughter of Helen and Joseph Eros. She graduated from Julia Richman High School. After she married in 1939, she moved to Connecticut, first to Black Rock, then Westport, before settling in Fairfield in 1955.

Varaljay had a long career as secretary to each headmaster at Andrew Warde High School from its inception in 1956 until she retired in 1980. She was a member of the governing body of her church; an officer of Southport Woman's Club, AARP, and Calvin Seniors; an ESL tutor at Fairfield Woods Middle School and Literacy Volunteers; a senior citizen intern in Washington.

Varaljay is survived by daughters, Jeanne (Joseph) Reed of Bexley, Ohio, Linda (Donald) Paduano of Northford and Abbey (Harvey) Auger of Charlotte, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Varaljay; and sister Rose Boros.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19 directly at Calvin United Church of Christ, 901 King's Highway East in Fairfield. Interment will follow at Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.

The family requests that contributions may be made in her memory to Calvin United Church or the Fairfield Woods Branch library.
