Herbert F. Holzberger, 93, Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Herbert F. Holzberger, currently of Fairfield and formerly of Glen Rock, N.J., died Monday, April 4. He was 93.

He was the husband of the late Doris (Pleune) Holzberger.

He was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Paterson, N.J., to the late George and Anna (Wagner) Holzberger. As a captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, he served in World War II and the Korean War. 

He studied engineering at Cooper Union and Fairleigh Dickinson Universities and was an engineer for New Jersey Bell, which became AT&T, for 44 years. Upon his retirement, he worked at the electronics lab at Bergen Community College.

He was longtime member and served on numerous committees at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Glen Rock. He attended First Church Congregational Fairfield, where he was welcomed as an associate member. He volunteered many hours in YMCA programs. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, fishing, ice fishing and family camping.

He is survived by his children, Edward K. Holzberger and his wife, Pamela, of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Dr. Carol A. Callahan of Fairfield; grandchildren, Melissa, Michael, Elizabeth, Kevin, Cara, Connor and Byron; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Holmes, of Ramsey, N.J.; and his cousin Walter Worrall and his wife, Jean, of North Haledon, N.J.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John and George Holzberger; and grandson, John Edward Holzberger.

His family will receive family and friends from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at their residence, 40 Samp Mortar Drive, Fairfield. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Fair Lawn, N.J.
