Jack Berkowitz, 85, Fairfield Business Owner

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Jack Berkowitz, of Fairfield and Delray Beach, Fla., died Feb. 4 at St. Vincent's Medical Center, with family at his side. He was 85.

He was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Bridgeport to Frieda and Louis Berkowitz. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Ruth Golde, for 59 years.

Berkowitz was a co-founder of the Duchess Family Restaurants and City Line Distributors along with his brother, Harold, more than 50 years ago.

He brought family and childhood friends into his business ventures, his family said. He was involved in many commercial real estate developments.

Berkowitz also was involved in many philanthropic organizations, including The Hillel Academy, Jewish Community Center, Jewish Home for the Elderly and UJA. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching sports with his family.

He is survived by three children, Lynn (Neil) Schwimer, Natalie Berkowitz and Michael Berkowitz; five grandchildren; four brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home in Fairfield. Burial will follow at Ahavath Achim Cemetery in Fairfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.
