Jeffrey P. Smith, 70, Of Fairfield, Bird Carver

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Jeffrey P. Smith of Fairfield died Sunday, Dec. 7. He was 70.

Smith was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Harry and Lillian Smith. He was a graduate of Rye Tech in Stamford and attended the Culinary Institute of America.

Before his retirement, he was the owner of A Sign Depot in Newtown and The Deli Bake in New Canaan, which he owned with his father. He was a well-known bird carver, and won several first place ribbons over the years at the Wildfowl Carving Competition in Maryland.

Smith is survived by his wife, Carol MacKenzie Smith; daughters, Kyle Ann McCarthy (Christopher) and Kelli Lyn Smith, both of Fairfield; and three grandsons. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Gale Lorden.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 S. Pine Creek Road, Fairfield. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Smith’s memory to The Connecticut Audubon Society, 2325 Burr St., Fairfield, CT.
