John J. Wellner Jr., 77, Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- John J. Wellner Jr., 77, of Fairfield, husband of Mary Bowns Wellner, died Monday, Aug. 10, at St. Vincent's Medical Center.

Born in Bridgeport to John and Helen Grecula Wellner, he attended Bassick High School, where he met the love of his life, Mary.

An antique car enthusiast, Wellner owned Greenfield Hill Service Gas Station for 52 years. He enjoyed drag racing and would do so regularly at Dover Raceway and held the track record from 1969-1971 with his 1938 Chevy. He was also a proud member of the NRA.

A man of hard labor and a work ethic like no other, Wellner went on to start his own construction business and put his heart and soul into building luxury homes.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his children, Tony Wellner, of Fairfield, and Eileen Wellner, of Fairfield; two brothers, Paul Wellner, of New York and Charles Wellner, of Florida; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Friends may greet the family on Friday, Aug. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield Center. Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mountain Grove Cemetery.
