FAIRFIELD, Conn. – John "Jack" James McMahon, a former health inspector for the Town of Fairfield, died Jan. 31 in Greensboro, N.C. He was 66.
McMahon was born Sept. 12, 1946, to Edward and Julia McGarry McMahon. Raised and educated in Fairfield, he attended St. Thomas Aquinas grade school and Fairfield Preparatory School.
He graduated from Sacred Heart University in 1968 and then served two years in the Army, assigned to the Military Police. He was stationed in Key West, Fla., and traveled often. He was a member of the Port 5 Naval Veterans in Bridgeport.
While working for the Health Department, McMahon served as a representative for the employees' union. He retired with a medical disability in 2007 and relocated to North Carolina, where he was cared for by his sister, Maureen, and then his niece, Sheila Lockhart.
In 1989, McMahon married Pamela Feeley. Together, they enjoyed women’s softball, their parrot, traveling and spending time with their friends. He enjoyed raising vegetables and cooking.
He cared for his wife at their home when she became ill. She died in 2005. He also helped care for his mother prior to her death in 2001.
McMahon is survived by three siblings, Maureen Laitres of Boulder, Colo., William “Bill” McMahon of Windsor Locks and Mary McMahon Gorton of Waterford; and several nieces and nephews. A niece, Jennifer Laitres, predeceased him.
A memorial service in Fairfield will be held in the spring. Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home in Fairfield is handling arrangements.
