He was born on April 21, 1925, in New Jersey. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn Keating Tommins for 61 years and son of Arthur and Marie Quinlan Tommins. A Long Island banking executive for 40 years, he retired in 1991. He held senior VP positions with First National Bank of LI, Franklin National Bank and its successor, European-American Bank, with responsibilities over auto and marine dealer financing and consumer lending.
He began his career with the Commercial Credit Corporation and served in professional positions as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the LI Better Business Bureau, Chairman of the Credit Committee of the LI Bankers Association and on committees of the New York State Bankers Association. He earned an advanced degree at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. Tommins was U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, enlisting after graduation from Southside High School.
He entered the V-12 Officer Training program at Colgate University and the NROTC Program at Dartmouth College. He graduated from Colgate in 1947, where he was a letterman in baseball and basketball and was also a member of the DKE fraternity. He was a 40-year member of the Sun & Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach and served on the Board of Governors.
He is also survived by his three sons, John F. Tommins, Jr. (Carmel) of Thornton, Colorado; James A. (Trish); William R. (Paula); and one daughter, Carolyn Tommins Whalen (Bill), all of Fairfield and formerly Rockville Centre, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Catherine McCahill.
Arrangements are at Spear-Miller in Fairfield. Viewing will be Tuesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at Our Lady of Assumption at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, N.Y.
