Margaret Martire, 96, Longtime Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Longtime Fairfield resident Margaret M. Martire, died Wednesday, Feb. 3. She was 96.

Martire graduated from the New York Fashion Institute in 1935 and began her long career as a talented seamstress. She was a member of the Ladies Garment Workers Union of New York. She loved to crochet and delighted in creating blankets and scarves for her family, and she also used her sewing skills to make clothing for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A devout Roman Catholic, Martire was a parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was a member of the Young at Heart Group, where she met many friends. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Martire is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gregory Martire; children Joanne Parrella and her husband Barry of Fairfield and Angelo Martire of Seymour; grandchildren Gregory Parrella and his wife Courtney of Milford, Angela Kestner and her husband Bryan of Hamden, Michael Martire and his wife Amanda of Bridgeport and Nico Martire and his wife Kaili of Columbus, Ga.; great-grandchildren London, Peyton, Cameron, Phoenix and Harper; sister Angelina DeMaria of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Angelo and Maria Giovanniello; and siblings Sabina and Anthony.

Visiting hours will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 at  Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield. A Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, meeting directly at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road, Fairfield. Interment will follow in Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport.
