Mary Proto, 95, Longtime Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Mary “Mae” Proto of Fairfield died Saturday, Oct. 12. She was 95. 

Proto was born June 19, 1918, in Bridgeport to Daniel and Lucretia English. She was a resident of Fairfield for the past 62 years. She volunteered her time for the American Cancer Society, the Heart Association, the MS Society, the Fairfield Library, various PTA’s and the Fairfield Women’s Club. She also was a vice president of the Widow/Widower’s Club at St. John’s Episcopal Church for over 20 years. She was active in the Holy Family Rosary Guild. She attended the Grasmere Eldercare Center for over 10 years.

Proto is survived by her children, Louis S. Proto, Jr. of Franklinton, N.C., and Lois Holly of Fairfield; four grandchildren; sister, Concetta Szabo of Fairfield; 10 great grandchildren; many nephews, nieces; and friends. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Louis S. Proto, Sr.; sisters, Antoinette Medvegy, Lucretia Medvegy and Lena Csizmazia; brothers, Joseph and Louis English; son-in-law, William Holly; daughter-in-law, Susan Proto; and grandson, Charley Rochlin.

Calling hours are Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the funeral home. Interment to follow in Lawncroft Cemetery.
