Merchant was born on Dec. 13, 1961, in Shaker Heights, Ohio to Chuck and Rosemary Merchant.
He graduated from Shaker Heights High School, Miami University of Ohio and Case Western Reserve University.
Merchant began work at GE Capital in 1999, earning praise for his ability to streamline communication from Forbes Magazine. He would eventually hold the positions of CTO and Global Managing Director.
He is survived by his parents; his wife, Ruth; three children, Marie-elle, Lilly and Madeline, three sisters, Ann and her partner, Peter Eble, Karen and her partner, Brian Coate, and Sarah and her partner, Pawan Divakarla.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the CT Challenge in his memory are welcomed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Southport Congregational Church, at 524 Pequot Ave. in Southport, with lunch to follow.
