Nicholas Merola, 98, Of Fairfield, Worked For Marshalls Department Store

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Nicholas "Mickey" Merola of Fairfield died Sunday, March 30. He was 98.

Merola was born in Bridgeport, he was the son of Michael and Carmella Merola and had been a life long Black Rock resident. He worked as a salesman for local retailers that included Greenwalds, The Fairfield Store and most recently, Marshalls Department Store in Fairfield. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II while stationed in Louisiana at Camp Claiborne.

He was a member of the Bridgeport Boys Scout Troop 34 for over 80 years and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award in 2005. He was a parishioner and usher at St. Ann Church in Black Rock and past commander of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1466 in Bridgeport.

Merola is survived by his brother, Anthony Merola of Shelton; daughter-in-law, Patty Merola of Black Rock; sister, Darlene Raytar; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Kathleen Polson Merola; and son, Bobby Merola.

Calling hours are Thursday, April 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Friday, April 4 in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road in Fairfield Center. Burial will follow with full military honors at Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.
