Patricia Protheroe, 84, Fairfield Registered Nurse

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Patricia Shaw Protheroe of Fairfield died Friday, Aug. 31. She was 84.

Protheroe was the daughter of Harry and Bertha Shaw of the Westville section of New Haven. She graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1946 and Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1949.

In 1951, she married David Protheroe, also from Westville. She was married 56 years until David died in 2007. Protheroe worked as a registered nurse for many years. After graduating from Hartford Hospital, she worked in pediatrics at New Haven Hospital.

After marrying, she worked in an Army hospital at Fort Pickett, Va., where her husband was stationed. She also worked as a private nurse and at the Yale infirmary before moving to Fairfield in 1952.

Protheroe continued her nursing career at Park City Hospital for 12 years and later at the Carolton Convalescent Hospital in Fairfield. She retired in 1998 after 50 years in nursing. A longtime member of Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church, she participated in the Parish Nurse Program at St. Vincent's Hospital.

She shared her husband's interest in antique cars and attended many shows. She also drove antique cars in the Fairfield Memorial Day Parade for many years.

Protheroe was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Chapman and Shirley Barry; and a brother, Harry Shaw. She is survived by two daughters, Jean Erhorn and Jill (Mark) Spigarolo, both of Fairfield; a son, Wesley (Robin) Protheroe, of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Protheroe, of Ashford, Conn., and Carrie Protheroe, of Mooresville, N.C.; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours or funeral services. Spear-Miller Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Smile Train, Fairfield Grace Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
