FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Raymond Lee Hooper Jr. of Fairfield died Saturday, Feb. 15. He was 90.
Hooper was born April 4, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, son of Raymond L. Hooper Sr. and Emma (Howells) Hooper. Before moving to Fairfield 10 years ago, he had lived in Westport for 47 years.
He was a graduate of Canton-McKinley High School. His college education was interrupted by World War II as he served as a U.S. Navy fitness specialist on Martha's Vineyard, in Rhode Island and at Harvard University.
He returned to graduate from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, with a degree in economics and received a master's degree in foreign trade from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Ariz.
After graduate school, he was transferred to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil, for seven-and-a-half years with Dun & Bradstreet. Returning to the U.S., he continued his sales/management career with D&B in New York for a total of 30 years.
While living in Westport, Hooper served on the RTM and the Westport Recreation Commission. He was also past president and former coach with the Westport Little League, a former volunteer driver with the American Red Cross, Mid-Fairfield County Chapter, and co-chairman of the Disaster Committee. In retirement, he served 15 years as a substitute teacher at Bedford Middle School.
Hooper is survived by his wife, Rita Vigilante Hooper; children, Jeffrey D. Hooper of Hamilton, Mass., Debra Hooper Fisher of Westport and Michael B. Hooper (Jill) of Fairfield; three granddaughters; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Barbara H. Biggers.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 651 Pequot Ave., Southport.
