Raymond W. Parry Jr., 86, Of Fairfield, Navy Veteran, Retired Teacher

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Raymond W. Parry Jr., 86, of Fairfield, died Thursday, April 16.

Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Raymond W. and Marie Cosgrove Parry.

Parry was a member of Fairfield University’s first graduating class in 1951. He earned a master’s degree in 1957 and a sixth-year certificate in 1960, both from Fairfield University.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-55, during the Korean War.

He was a member of American Legion Post 143.

Parry taught science at New Canaan High School from 1959-90 and is credited with starting the school’s summer learning and theater programs.

He also served as assistant football coach for the New Canaan High School Rams from 1959-67, and ran the athletic department's ticket operations from 1968-90. He also served as New Canaan's equipment manager from 1980-90.

After retiring from New Canaan Public Schools, Parry served as equipment manager for Western Connecticut State University's athletic department from 1990-2001.

He was inducted into WCSU's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 for his lifetime support to the Colonials athletic department.

Parry also taught with the National Science Foundation, both at Yale and Brown universities, and was a master teacher at Yale. Additionally, he was an assistant professor at University of Bridgeport.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Parry (Calle Bailey) of Brattleboro, Vt., and Timothy (Ursula) Parry of Bridgeport; two daughters, Deborah (Steve) Liptak of Fort Worth, Texas, and Maura (John) Cain of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

His wife, Ann Senchak Parry; and one son, James Parry, are deceased.

Calling hours will be 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home , 50 Reef Road, Fairfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 20, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road, Fairfield.

Interment with military honors will follow in the St. Thomas Cemetery, Fairfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fairfield Fire Department, Local 1426, P.O. Box 261, Fairfield, CT 06824.
