FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Retired Fairfield Fire Chief David W. Russell Jr., a U.S. Navy veteran, died Saturday afternoon at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, the Fairfield Fire Department announced. He was 85.
Russell joined the Fairfield Fire Department on Nov. 13, 1954, after his military service. He served as lieutenant and captain before being appointed chief in 1975 after the death of Fire Chief Joseph Stopa.
He served as chief for 16 years until retiring Jan. 1, 1991. Russell was a 1945 graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School.
Friends may greet the family Thursday, Sept. 5, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 S. Pine Creek Road, Fairfield. Interment with full military honors will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
