Richard J. Carpenter, 91, Of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Richard Jack Carpenter of Fairfield died Oct. 17. He was 91.

Carpenter was born Jan. 15, 1923, in Bridgeport, to Ernest and Mollie Carpenter. He was raised in the city's West End and was a graduate of Bassick High School's class of 1940. He was a member of the U.S. Army Infantry Division. He served in Europe during World War II on the front lines as a sergeant. He settled in Fairfield with his family and utilized the G.I. Bill to study towards becoming an electrician. He was an employee of Harvey Hubbell, Inc. in Bridgeport for almost 30 years.

Carpenter is survived by his children, Arlene Carpenter (Joseph G.) Pampalone, of Fairfield and Richard E. Carpenter (Roberta) of Oxford; two grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Grace Carpenter of Stratford, Anna Pesavento of Fairfield, and Josephine Grasso of Trumbull; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Fedela (Phyllis) Grasso Carpenter; and brother, Harold.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. A private service with full military honors will be conducted at a later date.
