Sylvia Tanacea Belba, 90, Former Fairfield Resident

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sylvia Tanacea Belba, a resident of San Jose, formerly of Bridgeport and Fairfield, Conn., died Oct. 14. She was 90.

Belba was born Jan. 24, 1924, in North Grosvenordale, Conn., to Vasil and Doxia (Vanghel) Tanacea. She lived in North Grosvenordale, Conn., from birth. After marriage she moved to Southbridge Mass., with her husband and lived with her in-laws. The family then moved to Bridgeport, Conn., in 1961 when her husband got a job at Sikorsky Aircraft. They later moved to Fairfield, Conn., in 1971 and finally San Jose in 1981 to live near their daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of St. Michael's Romanian church, Andrei Baron de Shaguna Ladies Society in Southbridge, Mass. The Romanian Benevolent Society (Farsarotul). She was also a member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox church in Bridgeport, Conn. and was also active in the Ladies Auxiliary. After moving to San Jose, she was a communicant of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, a member of the Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope.

Belba is survived by her daughter, Linda Jane (Adam) Gonzalez; a grandson, all of San Jose; brother, Thomas Tanacea (Loretta) of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Loretta Bici (George) of Garden City, N.Y., Virginia Giavara (Sutiri) of Stratford, Conn., and Judith Kavulich (Jack) of Bentonville, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Peter Belba; parents; sister, Chrysafia; and brothers, Spiro and Vanghel.

Calling hours are Monday, Oct. 20 from 4:30 p.m. at Lima Family Erickson Memorial Chapel, 710 Willow St., San Jose. An O.E.S service will be held at 6 p.m. and the Trisagion service will be held at 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1260 Davis St., San Jose followed by burial at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1260 Davis Street, San Jose building fund.
