Sylvia A. Watts, 78, Educator At Sacred Heart University In Fairfield

NORWALK, Conn. - Sylvia A. Watts of Norwalk died Sunday, Sept. 28. She was 78.

Watts was born in Yonkers, N.Y., to Anthony and Sylvia (Delbango) DePhillips. Raised in Baltimore, she was a graduate of The College of Notre Dame in Maryland and earned her doctorate in education from Columbia University. She worked as an educator, first at Central Catholic High School in Norwalk for 12 years, then at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield for over 30 years.

She was a member of various academic associations and was the longtime director of the Academic Incentive Program at Sacred Heart University.

Watts is survived by her husband, John W. Watts; sons, John Anthony Watts of Fairfield and Robert Watts (Amy) of Milford; five grandchildren; and many other relatives. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Karen L. Rydz Watts.

Calling hours are Thursday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Road, Norwalk, with burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
