Thomas F. Browne Jr., 71, Retired Fairfield Assessor

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Thomas F. Browne Jr., a retired Fairfield assessor, died Friday, Aug. 26, at in St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was 71.

Browne was the husband of Fairfield Town Clerk Elizabeth "Betsy" Peddle Browne.

He was born in Bridgeport, son of the late Thomas F. and Julie Sullivan Browne, and was a lifelong Fairfield resident. 

Browne was a graduate of Andrew Warde High School, class of 1963, and Sacred Heart University, class of 1968. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during Vietnam, and was a member of the American Legion Lt. Owen Fish Memorial Post 143. 

Browne retired as town assessor for Fairfield with over 28 years of service. He served as president of the Connecticut Association of Assessing Officers, president of the Northeast Regional Association of Assessing Officers and was named Assessor of the Year in 1994 and awarded the CAAO Distinguished Service Award in 2009. He was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the NRAAO. 

Browne had been an instructor at the University of Connecticut Assessors School for over 27 years.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart University Pioneer Club and treasurer of the Alumni Council, a Pioneer Award winner, a past president of the Fairfield Kiwanis Club, past chair of the Assumption Parish Council and a member of the Gaelic American Club and the International Association of Assessing Officers. 

Survivors include a brother, William S. Browne (Patricia), of San Diego; a sister, Geraldine A. Kubina, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; in-laws Joe and Beth Peddle of Fairfield; and brother-in-law Joe Peddle (Sheila), of Trumbull; and nieces and nephews Mike, Courtney, Julianne, Laura, Callie and Nolan, of California, and Maddy Peddle, of Trumbull.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield, with a Mass of Christian Burial. 

Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. 

Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 3-8 p.m., in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
