WESTPORT, Conn. – A 28-year-old Westport native who last month became a New Jersey police officer died in a traffic accident on Saturday in Jackson Township, N.J.
Christopher Hoffman, a graduate of Staples High School, died in the accident. Hoffman was sworn in as a police officer in Watchung on May 8. He resided in Brick, N.J.
According to a report on www.nj.com, Hoffman was killed in an accident at 6 p.m. Saturday when a Ford Ranger driven by Jason Wolek made a left turn in front of a Suzuki motorcycle ridden by Hoffman. Hoffman was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.
Wolek was charged with causing a death or injury while driving with a suspended driver’s license. He was also cited for failure to yield, driving an uninsured vehicle, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
Hoffman moved to Brick in New Jersey in 2005. Before joining the police force, he worked in the Borough of Seaside Heights as a Class Two Special Officer. He also worked at McGuire Air Force Base. He completed Air Force boot camp in Lackland, Texas, and served overseas for three months. He was a member of the Watchung PBA Local 193.
Hoffman is survived by his parents, Richard and Deanna; sisters Elizabeth Warshofsky (Josh); Alexis Green (Edmund); goddaughter and niece, Zoey; a nephew; and his paternal grandmother, Anne Hoffman.
Visiting hours are Wednesday, June 11, from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Brick. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Martha’s Church in Point Pleasant, N.J. Colonial Funeral Group is in charge of arrangements.
A Facebook page, Justice for Officer Chris Hoffman, has also been created to share remembrances.
