To the editor:

It has long been said that a picture tells a thousand words. Certainly history bares that out, the imagery of Helen of Troy is said to have launched a thousand ships.

Photographs can indeed tell a story and very often reveal a truth, so one truth is that in today’s political climate we often hear what we want to hear, whether by selective hearing or by politicians’ use of talking points to garner support and votes — in many cases, empty words devoid of truth with a string of promises never to be fulfilled or even addressed.

This year being an election year, we are once again under the onslaught of the never-ending campaigning of those who will say anything to justify their rise to prominence and to satisfy their political agenda.

There is also the photograph. We have in our midst a representative that has brought new meaning to the idea of a Kodak moment: Tony Hwang, never one to miss an opening or an event, and seemingly always captured at the right time and place.

Tony has been called “Mr Photo op” by some; certainly his opponent and other naysayers have used his proclivity to be photographed as a negative in their recent campaign rhetoric.

I view this from a different perspective. As a photographer, if you want to capture a good wildlife image, you have to go into the woods, so to speak. Tony Hwang is photographed very often, but there is a reason for that. Tony Hwang is a man of the people he represents.

Tony Hwang is photographed often because he participates in the same life of his constituents. Tony Hwang is in touch. Tony is one of us. Tony Hwang is practically a household name in Fairfield, CT.

A more selfless, tireless, individual would be difficult to find, a man who brings his own diverse background and his love of country and our collective storied history together.

I have disagreed with Tony on several key issues, but never has Tony backed away from a discussion or avoided a confrontation. Tony lives in the middle, a true representative of all, not just those that share his political party.

When the rubber meets the road I would rather be represented by an honest person than a simple yes man, and that truth is captured not only in Tony Hwang’s prolific community participation but in his word as a man.

It is for this reason that Tony has my support and my vote.
