Fairfield Letter: Keeping Campaigns Above The Fray

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Send letters to fairfield@dailyvoice.com.

To the Editor,

I recently issued a statement regarding Tara Cook Littman’s involvement in a documentary which was opposed to vaccinating children and which negatively portrayed large pharmaceutical companies for their roles in promoting vaccinations. I apologize for jumping to conclusions on this matter.

Mrs. Cook Littman has called my opinion on her choice to participate in this documentary as an attempt to take this campaign into the “gutter.” For the record, I have been one of the most outspoken political leaders against misleading political attacks. I was simply expressing my opinion that her participation in producing a documentary with this overall message was ill advised. I made this mistake because I said to myself who would sign on to be in such a bold documentary if you did not support the overall message? Brenda Kupchick is a champion for animals but I know she would never agree to participate in a documentary supporting puppy mills even if she was just speaking on the issue of adopting animals outside of puppy mills.

This season you will not see one negative mailer or message sent out from our local Republican candidates (Tony Hwang, Brenda Kupchick, Laura Devlin and Carol Way). The Republican candidates are spending their time and money on running on their records and telling the people of Fairfield what they will do for them heading forward. Laura Devlin has not responded to my comments because she has not seen the documentary. She is focused on discussing the issues that matter to the people of her district. Mrs. Cook Littman questions Laura's character for not speaking out on this issue.  Frankly, rising above the fray on this issue and staying focused on what really matters to the people of Fairfield and Trumbull speaks volumes to her character.  I have also apologized to Mrs. Devlin for distracting the focus of the overall campaign.

Mrs. Cook Littman condemns negative campaigning and politicians who attack each other. Although she is quick to condemn, she proudly campaigns side by side with Kim Fawcett and Kevin Coyner who have run one of the most negative and misleading campaigns in recent history (just check your mailboxes). She has yet to condemn their actions or distortions. If Mrs. Cook Littman is going to speak out and condemn politics as usual, she should address the vicious attacked by her good friends and running mates.

I am proud of the Republican candidates for rising above the fray, staying focused on the issues and not going negative.
