Fairfield Letter: Support Vahey In State Rep Primary

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Send letters to fairfield@dailyvoice.com.

To the editor:

I support Cristin McCarthy Vahey, our endorsed Democratic candidate for representative of the 133rd District, because she brings to public service the values I hold most dear: respect, an open mind, tremendous courage, and a genuine care for people.

Please join me to vote for Cristin in the Democratic primary on Aug. 12.

Cristin’s public service is an extension of her profound sense of connection with people. Ten years ago she watched parents and children endangered by speeding traffic every day as she walked her child to Stratfield Elementary School and organized her community to support reshaping the dangerous corner of Fairfield Woods and Melville Roads as well as replacing an antiquated traffic light. That, she has said, was her first step from community volunteer into politics.

Cristin helped lead Fairfield’s first Community Conversation on Diversity, because she believes we are enriched, individually and as a community, by people of different faiths, gender identities and socio-economic backgrounds.

An avid walker and bicyclist with her entire family, Cristin has helped guide and lead the Bicycle/Pedestrian Coalition, because she believes in promoting wellness, preserving the environment, and making our town accessible for seniors.

Cristin was also a driving force to organize Fairfield’s first-ever Government Ethics Workshop for Elected and Appointed Officials.

Cristin steadfastly supports women’s right to reproductive choice; but she also recognizes that many women who choose to have families are prevented by lack of child care from fulfilling their career and community potential. She will support programs that can change this.

With three children in our public schools, she has spent the past decade advocating for funding for education; for safe classrooms; and for prevention of student substance abuse, bullying and suicide.

As an active legislator for six years on the RTM, where I served alongside her, and for more than two years as selectman, attending every Board of Selectman meeting and countless other board, commission and committee meetings each week, she has mastered the details of incredibly complex public issues so she could cast responsible votes.

Cristin demonstrates that good legislation arises from representation, for what else should every legislative act be than the outcome of understanding the needs of the people one represents – you and me?

An accomplished leader; an experienced legislator; a compassionate human being; a natural and tireless advocate; a woman of intelligence and integrity, who defines herself by who she is, instead of what others are not; Cristin McCarthy Vahey is the fabric of Fairfield. Please vote for Cristin on Aug. 12 to represent the people of Fairfield’s 133rd.
