Letter: Bridgeporter Defends Fairfield's Fawcett

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Daily Voice accepts signed, original letters to the editor. Send letters to Fairfield@dailyvoice.com.

As someone who pays close attention to events at the General Assembly in Hartford, I am well aware of the effectiveness of Rep. Kim Fawcett in her legislative duties. That is why I was very surprised to hear about the attack by her opponent, Chris DeSanctis, and his campaign, about Rep. Fawcett’s attendance record at committee hearings.

Representatives are always members of a number of committees and often there are conflicting hearings and meetings of various committees and subcommittees occurring simultaneously. It is not at all unusual for just a handful or less of committee members to be in attendance at a hearing at any given time. This does not mean that a member is not aware of what is going on as the hearings are usually recorded, available on closed circuit, and testimony is always available to members. That is not to say that members shouldn’t try to be present as much as possible at hearings, but Kim Fawcett is by no means someone who is ever considered derelict in performing her duties.

Kim has a 93 percent voting record during her time in the General Assembly and that is the most critical measure by which to judge a Representative in my opinion. And when it comes to working hard for the interests of her constituents, I consider Kim to be among the very best. She is independent, her interest in her constituent concerns is very personal and she gets results.

Voters certainly have the right to make up their minds on which candidates they favor.  But they deserve to have accurate information on which to make their important voting decisions.
