Michael Herley has been a tireless advocate for the residents of Southport and RTM district One. Though his advocacy has been both broad and deep across many important issues facing our community, I think special mention needs to be made of just a few.
First, Michael had the foresight to create a virtual neighborhood watch group that shared information in real time using electronic communications (e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, etc). These new technologies were adopted quickly by our neighborhoods, and proved effective in leading to a quick arrest of thieves who were stealing packages off porches and doorsteps last holiday season.
When Hurricane Sandy threatened, Michael met with public safety to review operational response plans, and communicated those to his constituents creating an important sense of awareness. And when the storm wreaked havoc for Southport residents, he was tireless in holding the power companies accountable through special meetings.
Finally, Michael was pivotal in helping to preserve the operations of the Pequot Library by soliciting, capturing, and presenting our unified concern at the potential loss of this community treasure.
Michael is an uncommon public servant -- dedicated, fair, pragmatic, bi-partisan, and effective in the creation and execution of solutions. We strongly recommend him again for the RTM.
