1 Charged, 2 Hit by Car in Fairfield Chase

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – An argument in Fairfield led to a car crash that sent two to the hospital and at least one arrest Wednesday, according to police reports. Fairfield Police are still investigating the incident, which involved four local teens.

Police first received reports of a teenager on a bicycle on the Old Post Road chasing two others sharing a bike at about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators later found that the chase resulted from a fight involving four teens over a basketball game nearby.

During the chase, the two on the same bike were struck by a car near the intersection of Old Post Road and Belmont Street. The bike riders, an 18-year-old Stratford man and a 17-year-old Bridgeport resident, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A witness reported seeing one of the teens involved in the accident throw something from his pocket while waiting for police. Officers found a bag containing marijuana near the crash site, according to police reports. Neither the teens nor the driver of the car had yet been charged with any crimes or infractions.

The third person involved in the chase was seen in the area of the Post Road shortly after the crash. Police then received reports that the bicycle he was riding was a $440 Trek model reported stolen from the front yard of a Sunnieholme Drive home. Officers then found the suspect on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport and placed him under arrest.

Pedro Mercedes, 18, of Bridgeport was charged with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor. He was released on a promise to appear in court on July 2.

While responding to the other incidents, police learned that another teen involved in the fight, described as a white male, reportedly attempted to sell another stolen bicycle at the Trek Bicycle Store on the Post Road. Investigators are still trying to identify this person.
