The driver of the bus was pinned inside and was taken to Norwalk Hospital and was in serious condition, Norwalk fire officials said. Of the 41 passengers on the bus, 18 were taken to Norwalk Hospital and Stamford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident took place on I-95 southbound between exits 14 and 15 and 3:19 p.m. Fire officials said the bus his the rear of a tractor trailer. Crews used hydraulic tools and hand tools to extricate the driver of the bus within 15 minutes. Norwalk EMS arrived on scene and set up a mass casualty command post due to the number of passengers on the bus, which was traveling from Boston to New York City.

Once the MCI was called it brought in resources from surrounding towns and put area hospitals on alert for the possibility of multiple patients arriving, fire officials. Ambulances from Norwalk, Darien, Wilton, Westport and American Medical Response responded to the scene to assist in transporting patients.

The Norwalk Fire Department responded with 13 firefighters arriving on two engines, a rescue and command car.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by state police, who called in their accident reconstruction team. Highway traffic was reduced to one lane with sporadic full closures to allow emergency vehicles to access the scene. The highway was reopened around 9 p.m.

The accident comes one day after two accidents on highways in Norwalk. An 85-year-old Darien woman was killed in an accident on Route 7 in Norwalk Tuesday afternoon, and a driver suffered minor injuries in an accident on I-95 northbound in Norwalk Tuesday night.
