The Westport Police, EMS and Fire departments responded to the crash at about 10 a.m. on Post Road East near Crescent Road.

Arriving emergency units found three vehicles at the scene with extensive damage.

The driver of one of the vehicles was seriously injured and was transported to Norwalk Hospital by Westport EMS, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The man was identified as Harry Engel, 83, of Westport.

A preliminary investigation into the crash found that a westbound vehicle on the Post Road crossed into the eastbound lane, causing a head-on collision with two vehicles, police said.

The operators of the eastbound vehicles were not injured in the crash and were at the scene when responders arrived, police said.

The Post Road East was closed from Compo Road to Hillspoint Road for a few hours after the accident.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the Westport Police Department Accident Investigation Unit.

No charges have been filed.
