BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Bridgeport firefighters were called to another blaze in a residential building midday Wednesday, but this multifamily house turned out to be empty, officials said.

At least six engines responded to the fire, reported at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, in a multifamily home at 118 and 120 Arctic St. in Bridgeport.

Firefighters began battling the blaze from inside the three-story house but had to pull out because the second exit was compromised by the fire, said Bill Kaempffer, a Bridgeport public safety spokesman.

Due to the safety issues, they then battled the blaze from the outside.

The building next door at 108 Arctic St. was evacuated because heat from the fire was melting the siding on the house, Kaempffer said.

Authorities do not know what sparked the blaze, he said. An investigator is on the scene.

It was at least the third major residential fire in less than a week in Bridgeport.

"We always have bad stretches like this every so often," said Kaempffer, but he said he had no idea why. He did not want to speculate on the cause of the fire or say why so many fires have occurred recently in Bridgeport.

Two people were hospitalized Monday after jumping from the second floor of their burning home on Lindley Street in Bridgeport. At least six people were left without a home after that fire.

A massive fire on Hanover Street last Friday destroyed four houses and left more than 40 people homeless.  An off-duty firefighter captured drone footage of that fire

"I want no more snow and no more fires," said Mayor Bill Finch.

There was still a strong presence of fire officials at the scene a couple of hours later although the blaze had been extinguished.

Finch reminded residents that they can get free smoke detectors installed by the city. The smoke detectors last for 10 years. To get a smoke detector, contact the Bridgeport Fire Department.
