Bridgeport Man Charged In Fairfield Auto Burglary

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A burglary suspect was arrested Thursday night after he allegedly dropped a stolen wallet in the backyard of Fairfield home, according to police reports.

A Toilsome Hill Road resident called police after seeing a man wearing all black in his backyard. The witness’s dog began barking and the suspect ran, stumbled over a gate and dropped the wallet, police say. The wallet had been stolen from a car parked on Homeland Street two blocks away, according to the police report.

The owner of the wallet told police she had left her purse in her car while unloading groceries and didn't realize it had been stolen. While police were talking with the woman a nearby resident reported that her purse had been stolen from a car also. Police used the woman’s GPS tracker on her phone to find both purses hidden nearby on Windermere Street.

Around the same time an officer stopped Sherman Adams, 53, of Bridgeport riding a bike on Stratfield Road. Adams was wearing all black and had mud on this clothing, police say. The Toilsome Hill Road resident identified him as the man in his backyard, according to police reports.

Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara said police presence has been increased in the Stratfield neighborhood in response to the large number of burglaries. He credited Thursday night’s arrest to increased patrols and the help of residents. MacNamara said  Adams is a suspect in other cases in the area.

“We are still working to find out the extent of the impact that [Adams] has had in that area,” MacNamara said.

Adams was charged with second- and third-degree burglary, both felonies, and criminal trespass and fifth- and sixth-degree larceny, all misdemeanors. Bond was set at $1,000, but he was remanded to the custody of his probation officer, police say. He is due in court Oct. 17.
