Officer Sheldon Mayne is in critical condition at Hartford Hospital, police said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Mayne and his family,” Bridgeport Police Chief Joe Gaudett, Jr. said in a statement. “He is a great officer, brother, son, and uncle. The entire Bridgeport Police Department hopes he makes a full and speedy recovery.”

“Becoming a police officer is a special calling and when one of us need support we come together like a family,” said Sgt. Chuck Paris, president of the Bridgeport Police Union. “Sheldon Mayne is that brother that needs assistance.”

Friends and family have set up a Go Fund Me page for people to support Officer Mayne and his family. The page said Mayne is in a coma, but his head pressure is not increasing and he shows no sign of having an infection.

The Go Fund Me page has raised $13,225 in two days as of the writing of this article, an amount that surpasses the page’s goal of $10,000.

The Bridgeport police department has also set up a sub account at the Bridgeport Police Credit Union. For details, call 203-374-6500.
