Cops: Crack Found After Fairfield Hit-and-Run

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – An Ansonia man was charged with drug possession in Fairfield Tuesday. Christopher Canu, 42, also was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Knapps Highway, police said.

Another driver told Fairfield Police a man in a blue SUV allegedly rear-ended her while she was stopped at the intersection of Knapps Highway and Tunxis Hill Road. The vehicle then drove away onto Tunxis Hill, police said. A witness at the scene gave police a license plate number that was linked to Canu’s car, police said.

Fairfield police officers spotted Canu’s car on Parkwood Road near Holland Hill Road after the accident. When he was pulled over, he told police he drove away because he did not have insurance, police said. His registration also was suspended, police said.

The K-9 unit was called into the scene, and Canu agreed to allow police to search his SUV, police said. Fairfield’s police dog found a bag with a white rocky substance, which tested positive for crack cocaine, police said. A glass pipe and a pair of used syringes also were found at the scene, police said.

Canu was charged with possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia. He also was issued motor vehicle charges for evading responsibility, following too closely, failure to meet financial responsibility, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to return plates to the DMV. He was released on a bond of $1,000 and is due in court June 20.
