At about 9:20 a.m., Sept. 20, Westport patrol units responded to the parking lot on a report of a one-car crash in that area, police said.

Upon arrival, officers found the vehicle and determined that it had sustained disabling damage, police said.

A license check showed that the driver, Walter Hackett, 58, of Darien, was operating the vehicle with a suspended Connecticut operator’s license, poice said.

In speaking with Hackett, officers saw what appeared to be drug paraphernalia within the vehicle, police said.

They summoned a New Canaan Police Department narcotics canine to the scene. A canine sniff and subsequent search of the vehicle located crack cocaine in an upper console, police said.

Hackett was taken into custody and charged with violations of failure to drive in proper lane and operating a motor vehicle under suspension. For these charges, he was released on a written promise to appear.

He was also charged with possession of narcotics, and bond was set at $750 for this charge.

He was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 27.
