The man drove into the parking lot behind the Fairfield Motor Inn, went into a room and exited a short time later, police said.
As the car left the parking lot, the officer followed, police said. The officer later stopped the car while it was going 40 mph in a 20 mph zone, police said.
When asked whether he had any weapons or drugs in the car, the driver, identified as Adam Litze, 29, of Stratford, said no, police said. But the officer reported that a set of brass knuckles was clearly visible inside the car, police said.
Litze was taken into custody, police said. During a search of the car, officers found a hatchet, fireworks and four additional fireworks that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms classifies as explosive and require a permit to possess, police said.
Police charged Litze with two counts of possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, illegal possession of explosives and possession of fireworks.
He was held on $5,000 bond and taken to court Tuesday morning.
