Off-Duty Cop Catches Fairfield Shoplifting Suspect

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man was charged with shoplifting after an incident Wednesday afternoon in Fairfield.

The suspect was stopped when he tried to make his getaway in front of an off-duty police officer, according to police reports.

The incident occurred at Kohl’s department store on Tunxis Hill Road. Store employees told police a man took $114 worth of clothing from the store and ran out without paying, according to the police report.

A West Haven police officer was at the nearby Subway restaurant at the time and saw the suspect running down Greenfield Street, throwing clothes out of a backpack, police said. The officer stopped the running man and waited for Fairfield police to arrive.

Raphael LaChappelle, 24, of Bridgeport was charged with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor. He was released on a promise to appear in court and assigned a court date of Nov. 12.
