At 9:32 p.m., a 911 call reported a fire at the restaurant at 3449 Post Road.

Upon arrival, police and fire units found heavy smoke inside the building, which is a restaurant on the first floor and residential apartments on the second floor.

A resident employee told firefighters that after smelling smoke inside the building, he opened the restaurant and used an extinguisher to control the fire behind the counter.

"Quick actions by the residents prevented this fire from growing too large before firefighters arrived to extinguish it and will hopefully allow the business to reopen very soon,” Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson said.

Firefighters quickly searched and evacuated the building, while the remainder of the fire was extinguished by fire personnel.

No injuries were reported by any of the occupants.

Fire and smoke damage was confined to the first floor of the building, and the restaurant will remain closed until repairs can be made.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fairfield Fire Marsha’s office. It appears to have originated inside a  commercial dishwasher, fire officials said.

The Building and Health Departments went to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Units from the Fairfield Fire Department and a truck from the Southport Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
