A counselor at a Fairfield school told police a third party had reported that a young girl may have had a sexual relationship with an adult, but did not tell police the name of the victim, according to police reports. The parent of one of the victims later contacted Fairfield Police and identified Schare as the suspect, police say.
Two Fairfield girls told investigators that they had inappropriate contact with Schare over the course of a few years, according to police reports. Fairfield Police declined to reveal the ages of the victims and their relationship with Schare to protect their identities.
Schare was a boys’ swim coach and math teacher at Staples High School when the investigation began. He is no longer employed at the school, police confirmed.
Westport Police Capt. Sam Arciola on Tuesday afternoon said no complaints have been made against Schare.
Staples Principal John Dodig said he is unable to comment on the issue and deferred questions to Westport Superintendent Elliott Landon. A secretary in Landon's office said he is not commenting on the matter as it's an ongoing police investigation. A message seeking comment was also left Tuesday morning with Staples Athletic Director Marty Lisevick.
After an investigation dating to November, Fairfield Police filed for an arrest warrant for Schare and he turned himself in after learning of the warrant Monday morning, police say. They also searched his home and electronic devices, which provided evidence of other potential crimes, according to police reports. The case is still under investigation.
Schare was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of attempted third-degree sexual assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count each of third-degree and fourth-degree sexual assault, all felonies. He was released after posting a $150,000 bond and was arraigned in court Monday.
