FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Fairfield woman arrested after a 4-month boy from Shelton died at an unlicensed daycare she ran out of her home, has pleaded no contest to second-degree manslaughter, according to the Connecticut Post.

Carol Cardillo, 53, was charged last September in connection with the March 22, 2016 death of Adam Seagull, who died while in her care at a daycare she ran out of her Edgewood Road home in Fairfield. Investigators said she had given the boy Benadryl before putting him down for a nap.

Cardillo pleaded no contest on Monday to second-degree manslaughter under a plea deal that will see her sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspended after she serves five years, the Connecticut Post reported. Her lawyer is expected to argue for a lesser prison term when she is sentenced on Jan. 25, according to the Connecticut Post.

Police said that Cardillo had denied giving Seagull Benadryl before putting him down for a nap, but the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that he had Benadryl in his system when he died. Records had shown that Cardillo had also purchased Benadryl in the three weeks before the baby's death, including one bottle a week before he died, police said.

Cardillo's no contest plea came just before jury selection was set to begin in her trial, the Connecticut Post reported.
