At 4:19 p.m. Thursday, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding the fire.

Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood was first on the scene at 4:22 p.m. and confirmed a working fire with visible flames from the front of the home, Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Tracy said.

Sherwood assumed command and called for an additional engine and mutual aid for coverage.

"The first-in engine company, led by Lt. Barry, made an aggressive attack on the fire," said Sherwood. "They got a quick knockdown on the attic fire, and interior crews stretched lines to the first and second floor, encountered heavy smoke and some additional fire, which they extinguished."

Fire units remained on the scene into the early evening.

"I'm extremely proud of the extraordinary teamwork the fire department demonstrated in containing the fire and keeping it from extending into the home immediately adjacent, especially considering that the gap between them was less than a foot," Sherwood said.

No injuries were reported by occupants or first responders.

Fire Marshal Bill Kessler and Inspector Hank Ference from the Fire Marshal's Office were working to determine the cause of the blaze, which remains under investigation.
