According to the police report, officers stopped a gray Volkswagen hatchback at 2:30 a.m. on Kings Highway that was driving toward the Post Road for the loud muffler. When officers approached the car, they reported smelling a strong odor of burnt marijuana, police said.

The officer then conducted a search of the car and found less than half an ounce of hashish, police said. The officer issued the passenger, a Fairfield 19-year-old, an infraction ticket on a charge of possession.

Officers also found a 10-inch silver machete with a plastic handle within reach of the driver, Jonathan Metrano, 19, of Fairfield.

Metrano was charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and released on $200 cash bond with a court date of April 15.
